The adventure of being a Portuguese #Lisbon 2

Undoubtedly, each city differs from each other and has its own charming attractions that capture its visitors attention. That is why today I will show you one of the most charming attractions in Lisbon – miradouros which translated means panoramic view.

As I mentioned in a previous publication, the Portuguese capital is located on seven hills, which in a very natural way have formed these panoramic balconies at different points of the city. With this post, I will guide you across all 26 panoramic views, given that some of them are public and free, and others are paid and created by people (museums, skyscrapers, etc.)

  • Lisbon Viewpoint 25: Jardim Botânico da Ajuda
  • Lisbon Viewpoint 26: Amoreiras 360 Panoramic View

Lisbon Viewpoint 1: Miradouro das Portas do Sol

Perhaps this is the most popular panoramic site in the city, due to the fact that it is near the center and in the immediate vicinity are some of the most popular tourist attractions: Castelo de S. Jorge, Igreja de São Vicente de Fora , Panteão Nacional and Sé de Lisboa. The view provides a beautiful panorama over the historic quarter of Alfama and the Taju River. (free of charge, open 24 hours)

Miradouro das portas do sol

Lisbon Viewpoint 2: Miradouro de Santa Luzia

It is located just across the building which separates Santa Luzia and Miradouro das portas do sol. This panoramic site is also among the most popular, but is considerably bigger than the previous one and has very beautiful balconies with azulejo and flowers. (free of charge, open 24 hours)

Miradouro de Santa Luzia

Lisbon Viewpoint 3: Miradouro de São Pedro de Alcantara

It is one of the most central panoramic views, but unfortunately, it has been closed for 1-2 years, as they have found that the base of the balcony is weak and are looking for alternatives to reinforce it. The photo is old just to get an idea of how it used to look like. (free of charge, open 24 hours)

Miradouro de São Pedro de Alcântara

Lisbon Viewpoint 4: Miradouro Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen / Miradouro da Graça

This is one of the most romantic panoramic sites in Lisbon (proof is the picture). From here, you can see the castle and most of the city perfectly. (free of charge, open 24 hours)

Miradouro da Graça

Lisbon Viewpoint 5: Miradouro da Senhora do Monte

This is the highest panoramic view in Lisbon, and perhaps one of my favorite places in the city. Here you can see the whole city in all its grace and colors. You will not regret visiting this place anytime – day, night or even when it’s raining! (free of charge, open 24 hours)

Miradouro da Senhora do Mont

Lisbon Viewpoint 6: Castelo de S. Jorge

No matter what we are talking about, people in those times were proficient in strategic locations and it is no accident that the castle is here! It provides direct views of the city, the ocean and the countryside, and has played an important defensive role in the past. (paid 8,50 €, working time: November – February 9:00 – 18:00 and March – September 09:00 – 21:00)

Castelo de S. Jorge

Lisbon Viewpoint 7: Elevador de Santa Justa

Getting on the balcony of the oldest functioning elevator in the world is definitely a thrill that is not to be missed! It can be said that the elevator is located in the heart of Lisbon and from here you can see from above the central squares and buildings. (paid € 1.50, working hours: 7:00 – 22:45)

Elevador de Santa Justa
Elevador de Santa Justa

Elevador de Santa Justa

Lisbon Viewpoint 8: Padrão dos Descobrimentos

It is possible to get to the top of the monument of discovery, one of the most important symbols of Lisbon and Portuguese history. From here you can see the Belem district as well as the ocean. (paid 6 €, opening hours: 10:00 – 19:00)

Padrão dos Descobrimentos

Padrão dos Descobrimentos

Lisbon Viewpoint 9: Parque Eduardo VII

It is one of the largest parks in the capital, but the park is built on a slope that, believe me, once climbed, the award is an incredibly beautiful view over the center of Lisbon and the river. (free of charge, open 24 hours)

Parque Eduardo VII

Lisbon Viewpoint 10: Arco da Rua Augusta

The Arc de Triumph is an interesting tourist attraction from which you can see the Praça do Comércio (Commerce Square), where once the trading has taken place after every successful expedition. (paid 3 €, working hours: 9:00 – 21:00)

Arco da Rua Augusta

Lisbon Viewpoint 11: Miradouro de Santa Catarina

Unfortunately, this panoramic site is closed due to an unstable base. It is said that this was a favorite place for young people, where they gathered for a drink and watched the sunset. (free of charge, open 24 hours)

Miradouro de Santa Catarina

Lisbon Viewpoint 12: Miradouro de Cristo Rei / Santuário Nacional de Cristo Rei

This is the only panoramic view on the list, which is on the other side of the river. To get there, take the ferry from Cais do Sodre at the cost of a city ticket and travel to Almada (the name of the Cacilhas stop). Why is it both paid and free? Because you can go to the panoramic base for free, from where you will see Lisbon on the other side, but if you pay 6 euros (it is important to emphasize that it is only cash paid there), you have the opportunity to climb to the statue of Jesus, which is 110 meters tall. (paid 6 € and free, working hours 9:00 – 18:30)

Miradouro de Cristo

Miradouro de Cristo

Lisbon Viewpoint 13: Panteão Nacional

The Pantheon of Lisbon is an interesting historical and cultural heritage that gives you the opportunity to get on and out of the wide balconies at its disposal. The view from here is to the old town and the river. (3 € paid, 10:00 and 17:00 hours)

Panteão Nacional

Lisbon Viewpoint 14: Miradouro da Rocha Conde de Óbidos

This panoramic site is located in front of the Museum of Ancient Art and is relatively small but has a beautiful garden where one can sit and enjoy the view. (free, open 24 hours)

Miradouro da Rocha Conde de Óbidos

Lisbon Viewpoint 15: Torre de Belém

As I have mentioned in a previous publication, this is the jewel of tourism in Lisbon. The tower can be accessed and viewed. As you can imagine, it has several floors, and a top balcony serving to control incoming and outgoing ships in the past. (paid 6 €, working hours October – April: 10:00 – 17:30, May – September: 10:00 – 18:00)

Torre de Belém

Lisbon Viewpoint 16: Jardim to Torel

This panoramic site is a park that overlooks the city and the river. The place is popular for relaxation. (free of charge, open 24 hours)

Jardim do Torel

Lisbon Viewpoint 17: Miradouro da Penha de França

This is one of the less popular panoramic sites, which offers one of the most interesting views, as both the western and eastern parts of the capital can be seen from here. (free of charge, open 24 hours)

Miradouro da Penha de França

Miradouro da Penha de França

Lisbon Viewpoint 18: Santo Estêvão Belvedere

This is a small panoramic view in front of a church that has a sympathetic panorama of the river and the city. (free, open 24 hours)

Lisbon Viewpoint 19: Miradouro do Largo das Necessidades

This panoramic site is far beyond any sightseeing, and perhaps this is the reason why it is not popular, but it is beautiful and gives a wide view of the April 25 Bridge. (free, open 24 hours)

Miradouro do Largo das Necessidades

Lisbon Viewpoint 20: Miradouro de Santo Amaro

This panoramic view is comparatively low, but extremely sympathetic and hospitable. It shows the river and the bridge in close proximity. (free of charge, open 24 hours)

Miradouro de Santo Amaro

Lisbon Viewpoint 21: Miradouro Keil do Amaral (Monsanto)

This place is already quite out of the city and is located in the largest wooded area of Lisbon. The place is famous for its various sports activities and a favorite picnic spot amongst local people. (free of charge, open 24 hours)

Miradouro Keil do Amaral

Lisbon Viewpoint 22: Miradouro do Monte Agudo

It is a very nice place that is quite hidden from the tourists and is known among local people. There are frequent events, and people gather for drinks with a nice company and even more enjoyable views of the city. (free, open 24 hours)

Miradouro do Monte Agudo

Lisbon Viewpoint 23: Miradouro dos Moinhos de Santana

The place is a park built on a hill where you can climb to the highest spot and enjoy a view to the ocean. (free of charge, open 9:00 – 20:00)

Miradouro dos Moinhos de Santana

Lisbon Viewpoint 24: Old Panoramic Restaurant in Monsanto

In my opinion, this is one of the most interesting places in the city. This is an abandoned restaurant, which to this day has a working time to visit. The view that you will witness here is impressive in every aspect and is extremely rich.  You can see the entire city and the outskirts in a wide range from here. (free of charge, open 9:00 – 18:00)

Old Panoramic Restaurant in Monsanto

Lisbon Viewpoint 25: Jardim Botânico da Ajuda

A botanical garden that has a rich variety of plants, as well as beautiful architecture. It is built on two floors and from the second one a beautiful view of the river opens up, as on the foreground is the beautiful garden. (paid 2 €, open 10:00 – 17:00)

Jardim Botânico da Ajuda

Lisbon Viewpoint 26: Amoreiras 360 Panoramic View

Last but not least, I left the largest, rich and incredible panorama of the city, namely the Amoreiras skyscraper, which provides a 360 degree panorama over Lisbon and the surrounding area. From here, you can see everything – Lisbon, the other cities on the other side of the river, the ocean and the cities behind Lisbon. This is the most complete view that you shouldn’t hesitate to visit! (paid 5 € (ticket purchased from desk information), 10:00 – 12:30 and 2:30 – 18:00 during the winter season, and until 22:00 during the summer season)

Amoreiras 360 Panoramic View

Amoreiras 360 Panoramic View

This is my list of panoramic views in Lisbon. As you can see, the city has a wide choice and it is up to you which ones you will visit. You should keep in mind, as I mentioned in some of the panoramic sites, they are closed or renovated, and at best times new ones are found.

Looking at the city in this way gives you a different idea of the place. You are witnessing the momentary landscape magic that draws beautiful pictures in front of you that will leave you with lasting memories and emotions.
