Gorge of the Erma River

Gorge of the Erma River, a nature’s tale

Today’s adventure is in a new shape which I have been planning to use since last winter when I was traveling and wanted to create something different from the ordinary publication style. This whole idea is due to the simple reason that the Bulgarian nature is unique without exceptions. That is why today I present you my first destination in two different seasons!

I had the pleasure of visiting the magic gorge of the Erma River twice this year. The very gorge is incredibly large and impressive which gives you an adventurous spirit when you pass through it.

Also known under the name Trun’s gorge – it is located near the town of Trun (3km) close to the Serbian border. The landmark itself is marked very well and has numerous signs on the road. At the very beginning of the place there is a nice parking lot with a large driveway, equipped with picnic tables and a children’s playground, all under the screech of the gorge.

I first visited the place during the winter when it was deserted and quiet, making this visit even more special. The only downside here was that the bridges and stairs were slippery and you had to be careful where you stepped. But at the expense of this, the colors that the winter had painted on the gorge and the natural scenery were really breathtaking!

The blue shades of the Erma River were hypnotizing, and the ice pendants on the stones added some kind of humility to the view. Going past the river, we had to descend into the darkness of a tunnel, carving into the rock itself. Winter was not as pleasant as the summer, because it was quite cool inside.

Once we passed the tunnel we appeared on the other side of the tunnel, this side opens more beautiful views to the very gorge. The more you move away, the nicer the picture gets above the canyon-like gorge. I hope that I can prove it to you through my pictures.

Winter generally gives a pinch of magic to nature and it is always certain that an adventure related with natural landmark in this season will be unforgettable.

But the summer! Well, the summer…that place gets a completely different image. It makes it a much more welcoming and naturally more visited destination. Everything is green, light and hot.

The gorge stands out even further under the summer sun and makes you feel very small. But the experience is quite adventurous, accompanied by a few extremes for the brave ones out there. Wooden bridges squeak even more after the winter, and a stair is missing, but all this makes it more memorable, lol.

The Erma River Gorge also has its own legend, stating: an impossible love between two lovers – a rich maiden and a poor youth. The oath mother swore them and they turned into two rocks on either side of the Erma River so they were always near each other but never together. The water of the river was fed by the tears of the two separated loving souls.

But let’s look at the positive side of things. They are some beautiful rocks, forming one of the most beautiful places in Bulgaria!

Generally I like the place very much and I would recommend it for a one-day trip. Because it is different as a destination, beautiful as a place and pleasant as an emotion.

Regardless of which season you visit – it is worth it! Because, as already mentioned, the nature of Bulgaria is beautiful at all times, without exceptions!

Information:
The gorge of the Erma River is 75 km away from Sofia and 3 km from the town of Trun;
The place is very suitable for a picnic or a walk with friends;
It is advisable to wear comfortable shoes for easier and trouble-free passage through the bridges;
It is not suitable for very young children unless you have attached them to yourself in some way;
You will meet different friendly animals like dogs, sheeps, etc .;
