Gorge of the Erma River

Gorge of the Erma River, a nature’s tale

Today’s adventure is in a new shape which I have been planning to use since last winter when I was traveling and wanted to create something different from the ordinary publication style. This whole idea is due to the simple reason that the Bulgarian nature is unique without exceptions. That is why today I present you my first destination in two different seasons!

I had the pleasure of visiting the magic gorge of the Erma River twice this year. The very gorge is incredibly large and impressive which gives you an adventurous spirit when you pass through it.

Also known under the name Trun’s gorge – it is located near the town of Trun (3km) close to the Serbian border. The landmark itself is marked very well and has numerous signs on the road. At the very beginning of the place there is a nice parking lot with a large driveway, equipped with picnic tables and a children’s playground, all under the screech of the gorge.

I first visited the place during the winter when it was deserted and quiet, making this visit even more special. The only downside here was that the bridges and stairs were slippery and you had to be careful where you stepped. But at the expense of this, the colors that the winter had painted on the gorge and the natural scenery were really breathtaking!

The blue shades of the Erma River were hypnotizing, and the ice pendants on the stones added some kind of humility to the view. Going past the river, we had to descend into the darkness of a tunnel, carving into the rock itself. Winter was not as pleasant as the summer, because it was quite cool inside.

Once we passed the tunnel we appeared on the other side of the tunnel, this side opens more beautiful views to the very gorge. The more you move away, the nicer the picture gets above the canyon-like gorge. I hope that I can prove it to you through my pictures.

Winter generally gives a pinch of magic to nature and it is always certain that an adventure related with natural landmark in this season will be unforgettable.

But the summer! Well, the summer…that place gets a completely different image. It makes it a much more welcoming and naturally more visited destination. Everything is green, light and hot.

The gorge stands out even further under the summer sun and makes you feel very small. But the experience is quite adventurous, accompanied by a few extremes for the brave ones out there. Wooden bridges squeak even more after the winter, and a stair is missing, but all this makes it more memorable, lol.

The Erma River Gorge also has its own legend, stating: an impossible love between two lovers – a rich maiden and a poor youth. The oath mother swore them and they turned into two rocks on either side of the Erma River so they were always near each other but never together. The water of the river was fed by the tears of the two separated loving souls.

But let’s look at the positive side of things. They are some beautiful rocks, forming one of the most beautiful places in Bulgaria!

Generally I like the place very much and I would recommend it for a one-day trip. Because it is different as a destination, beautiful as a place and pleasant as an emotion.

Regardless of which season you visit – it is worth it! Because, as already mentioned, the nature of Bulgaria is beautiful at all times, without exceptions!

Information:
The gorge of the Erma River is 75 km away from Sofia and 3 km from the town of Trun;
The place is very suitable for a picnic or a walk with friends;
It is advisable to wear comfortable shoes for easier and trouble-free passage through the bridges;
It is not suitable for very young children unless you have attached them to yourself in some way;
You will meet different friendly animals like dogs, sheeps, etc .;

No, it's Yuki-Doro conquering Cherni vrah peak at the age of 4 months.

Who would think that this little guy would manage to accomplish this so early stage in his life.

Imagine what he would do in the future, Everest here we come! 😂

People have said it well that the dog is man's bes People have said it well that the dog is man's best friend.

This weekend was Yuki-Doro's first real adventure-challenge.

We wandered through the winter landscapes of snowy Vitosha. Based on the amount of snow he ate, yes, he definitely liked the snow, it's good that it is low in calories, otherwise I would have returned to Sofia with a meatball.

Definitely this little one knows how to brighten up the atmosphere and make the trips more interesting.

I look forward to our next adventures.

Do you travel with your pets?

Winter etudes of Vitosha Mountain • So, let us Winter etudes of Vitosha Mountain •

So, let us be clear here - I cannot stand winter and I really do not like the snow and cold. It is probably inherited from my Italian bloodline, who knows, but anyways.

However, I must confess, I have been multiple times in Vitosha mountain but probably for the first time I visit it for a whole hike to the peak during winter. Won’t lie, I enjoyed a lot the nature scenes I saw during my hike but still I was going to loose my hands no matter I had gloves all the time.

Overall, the experience was pleasant because it is good to remind ourselves what a true winter looks like. We all know that because of the global warming we do not have that heavy winter that we used to have back in the early 2000s. So, to see so much snow and peace at one place was a delight for my senses.

As I always say, it is good to challenge yourself and go out of your comfort zone. Only then you can discover many intriguing things, but most importantly - to learn so many new things about yourself.

Cherni vruh, the highest point of Vitosha mountain Cherni vruh, the highest point of Vitosha mountain 2290 m the peak is the fourth highest mountain summit in Bulgaria.

It presents the best spontaneous getaway if you want to go out in the nature. Also is way to good challenge yourself. I myself did it multiple times and must confess every time I climb it from different points it amazes me with the beauty that this mountain contains.

The stone river in Vitosha or also known as The Go The stone river in Vitosha or also known as The Golden Bridges - amazingly beautiful natural phenomenon - the largest stone river in the Vitosha National Park. Massive stones (average size 2-3 meters) flow down from the mountain top to the valley for more than 2 miles long and 150 meters wide.

The stone river is ‘descending’ from elevation 1800 m above sea level to 1410 m at Golden Bridges site.

Is there anyone who lives in Sofia and had never visited Vitosha Mountain?

Because clearly this mountain is a pure nature gift for us all!

Vitosha Mountain is the oldest nature park on the Balkan Peninsula. Its gorgeous silhouette is visible from almost all positions in the city and is inseparable part of Sofia’ image.

Vitosha Naturе Park is the most broadly protected territory in Bulgaria, and due to its proximity to Sofia it has turned into a site of education in responsible attitude towards nature.

And don’t forget Sofia is the only European capital with such a big mountain so close to the city center.

So no matter the time and season Vitosha is always a good choice for adventures.

The geological phenomenon "Strupanitsa" is formed The geological phenomenon "Strupanitsa" is formed among the Maastrichtian limestones of "Mezdrenska" and "Kailashkata svita".

It is located 2 km north of the village of Karlukovo, on the right bank of Iskar rivar, to a cliff with a height of 60-70 m. It is a huge landslide of rock blocks, mostly cubic and parallelepiped-shaped, with dimensions up to 15-20 m.

The formation of the landslide is most likely due to the undermining of the vertical rocks of the gorge of the Iskar River at a very sharp left turn. Most likely, a deep niche was formed initially, and later the cracked massive limestones collapsed, changing the course of the river.

The area has been declared a rare natural phenomenon by the Committee for Environmental Protection.
